87 yamaha outboard going into limp/safe mode

Altitude?:ROFLMAO: I plan on putting it on the water in the morning. I put it back together and I will try to eliminate the stuff you have laid out for me. I truly appreciate your effort and time and patience with me. I will drop a line when those processes are done. Thank you Boscoe

Missed this reply. I see what you're saying. The wire could have continuity but have a bad spot that connects the circuit to the alarm. The only time I have heard the alarm sound through all of this is when I turn the oil sensor switch upside down to simulate "Low Oil". No other time has it...

I think I did confirm it is not bad from these sections of wire. That is why I found the spots I sent the pic of to your email. I opened those connections and did a continuity test between each connection on the wiring diagram. The two spots I did not have good wire (continuity) I narrowed...

You’re calling the bigger electric junction box the CDI box where the pink wire terminates? So disconnect it there?

By starting I just meant everything still appeared to operate properly as far as starting with the key switch.

I can’t send pics on the app for some reason. Would you be willing to give me an email so I could send you a pic or two? If not no big deal. The ground wire did not have continuity from the horn to the thermo switch. Thus the problem was the two spots I found “open”. One in the path between the...

87 yamaha outboard going into limp/safe mode

So I found two spots where the ground was bad between the thermos switch and the horn. But they are almost look like they are purposeful gaps. They have two connectors about an inch and a half apart, and our heat shrinked between them. Makes me wonder if they were put there on purpose but, after...

No worries. I was writing it as you posted so you wouldn't have seen it. I never know how much background to provide either. I want people to know that I have some knowledge, but there is a reason I get help lol.

So, I should take apart the remote and start there or should I start toward the CDI boxes and work toward the horn?

I can appreciate that. I have been a high voltage lineman for 32 years and the last 10 years as a substation mechanic. I have learned all about elusive troubleshooting. I can read schematics and wiring diagrams. I have some auto experience and small motor experience as I do work on my stuff...

87 yamaha outboard going into limp/safe mode

I did some more research, and I am stumped. I was under the impression that to go into the low RPM mode it had to do with one of two things. Low oil or high temp.

Okay, so I haven't heard from in a while, so let me catch up. I have the oil tank (on the motor) drained and the oil sensor out. I checked it per the manual and I can see it going on and off with my meter. I put the oil sensor back in the circuit and with it in the low position I can hear the...
