225 EFI Bleed lines keep popping, splitting - backfiring, lean running?

Would appreciate advice. Rebuilt 225hp, 3l, 2000 with a used block (previous one put con rods through crankcase). Had use of a repair manual and believe all bleed lines were correctly connected along with directional valves, but these lines keeping popping and getting backfires and rough running. Seems lean. Timing is right and injectors cleaned. Currently no bleed return to the vapor separator. I think this model (serial OT 108729) did not have one? Any clues/solutions very welcome.
