I have a carbureted 50hp outboard that has sat for around 4 years. I changed fuel filter drained and refilled with new gas, new spark plugs. Will start with throttle wide open but dies immediately, I’m thinking cleaning the carbs would do it?

Hi Will,

Welcome to the forum.

What year is your outboard?

Yes, I agree that cleaning the carbs is likely warranted. Especially if they had.ANY fuel left in them before the long term storage.

Just be advised that these particular carburetors can be very difficult to properly and thoroughly clean.

If you plan on doing the work yourself, the HONDA MARINE CARBURETION MANUAL will help you get them back in shape the first try instead of the 3rd, 4th or 9th time.
Best $50 you could spend on that fine outboard.

Well, if you're interested in getting the carb manual, you can find it here;

Look under "support materials".

I highly recommend having it rather than "winging it" on this adventure. Although, if you don't read it then.....

Also, be careful because, while many parts are still available should you lose or break something, many are not. Including the base carb itself.
