Threads flywheel big twin 1965 40 hp

Is there a way to remove the flywheel without removing the alternator? The top of the alternator that the belt connects to overlaps the flywheel, so that I can't remove the flywheel on my 1965 Evinrude 40 horse Lark VII without getting the top pulley wheel out of the way.

1965 40 hp Evinrude Lark VII Wiring Configuration & Motor Testing

For anyone who has made it this far in this thread, the story ends well. Since my last post, I removed and replaced all of the electronics suggested by Racerone: coils, condensers, points and spark plugs. I even found the "grey haired chap," Fred, at our local Sportsfisherman's boat shop who...

1965 40 hp Evinrude Lark VII Wiring Configuration & Motor Testing

Points and plugs adjusted and boat is running like a dream. Sounds great, idles properly and starts with gusto. The oiler wick came in and I need to pull it back apart and install it, but it's nice to see the adjustments were so effective. How about running lights wiring? Where do the leads...

1965 40 hp Evinrude Lark VII Wiring Configuration & Motor Testing

Parts have been ordered and arrive tomorrow. Pulled the flywheel this evening and examined the existing parts. A couple of problems were discovered. We adjusted the points which were barely opening and are now set to .020 in. as the crankshaft rotates into position. Also, the spark plug on...

1965 40 hp Evinrude Lark VII Wiring Configuration & Motor Testing

I am trying to isolate the electrical issue and let me know if you agree with my assessment. When I jump (shown below) from the white wire (upper right) of the cut-off switch , to the black wire (front center) of the cut-off switch, the ignition system works. Four other scenarios I tried...

Safety switch close-up Cutoff switch close-up forgot to reattach wires for the photo) I have not tried anything further, but I assume that removing the flywheel is my next step so that I can clean and tinker with the safety switch? Should I also remove and clean the cutoff switch? Lastly...

1965 40 hp Evinrude Lark VII Wiring Configuration & Motor Testing

So I'm not sure about the polarizing, but am willing to try that next if necessary, but here’s something I tried and had some positive results. I re-tested the solenoid removed from the system, by running a wire to each small post directly from the positive and negative posts on the battery...

1965 40 hp Evinrude Lark VII Wiring Configuration & Motor Testing

I'm back to working on this motor and am mystified by the electrical system. I have removed the starting solenoid (seen in electrical box photo), tested it by connecting 12V + and - to the small posts, and checking resistance at the two large terminals. The OHM reading showed 0.1 resistance at...

1965 40 hp Evinrude Lark VII Wiring Configuration & Motor Testing

The voltage regulator on my 1965 40 hp Evinrude Lark VII selectric is missing. If the part is no longer available on Marineengine.com and I haven't found it elsewhere either. How can I determine the output voltage of the original part and use a newer part as a substitute? I don't see those...
