On inspection there is lots of depth and thread for an extended length plug .... now just need to find one.
Edit... on closer inspection... only on one side... but I see there may be a 9mm plug available to go to larger thread
Update .... still have not found a drive that would for sure fit.
In the mean time I pulled the drive to do measurements... and the drive felt fine as far as not feeling rough or worn .... and started thinking that the grease may have started to dry out... over 25 years old... so put it in...
.ya it looks like aftermarket starters are readily available in all price ranges ..... all I really need is a drive or bending.... and it looks like drives are available.... the trouble is having confidence in fit
Thread update.
I have been using engine daily for the last week... oil is completely clear.
After a few hrs use and cool down, I can remove hose and drain a couple tablespoons of water out of loop.
Engine runs good and strong.... Will likely pull power head this winter and replace head gasket...
So, more testing results ..... fresh oil change .... ran engine in tank for about an hr... let sit overnight and then drained a cup of oil from engine.... in that oil was about a tablespoon of clean water, so condensation.... ran again for about an hr... removed hose from valve cover to...
Bought a bf50 last fall not running.... did some mechanical repairs (crank replace)
Put it on an old boat and started running it at ice out engine runs flawless .

I recently went thru the the same trouble trying to order bearing carrier for 87 bf15 ... at first they indicated that it was available, but eventually admitted it was discontinued.
I ended up repairing mine .
I had some trouble last time .... turns out the files were too large... reduced size and they uploaded no problem .... just have to be patient, takes about 20 to 30 seconds per pic
Well I now have more time on internet trying to confirm parts than I do actually working on motor.... so I bit the bullet this am and placed my order.... so it is now all in the hands parts God's now!
