    Starter bracket stud #0308354

The stud that holds the starter bracket on my J25TEEDA has bent and knocked my starter motor out of alignment with the flywheel. The stud is part number 0308354. Am I likely to find a replacement stud in an auto parts store or do I have to go to an OEM supplier?

Poor mesh of Bendix gear with flywheel

Buying a new part without understanding the problem can be a waste of money. I couldn’t figure out why my starter motor was not fully engaging with the flywheel teeth. A new starter motor did not result in a better mesh. A tree had fallen on the engine cover and the starter took the brunt of the...

Good thing I didn't fool around with that!

Poor mesh of Bendix gear with flywheel

It has been the same flywheel and the same starter since I've had it, for about 10 years now. However, a tree fell on the motor this spring and that seems to have caused the misalignment. I had the starter and bracket off, and disassembled the starter, but I don't see anything bent and I don't...

Poor mesh of Bendix gear with flywheel

What determines the degree of meshing between the Bendix gear and the flywheel? My engagement is pretty thin and it seems to be wearing out the lower part of the teeth on the flywheel.

    Which end is up

The answer is that the cup should be facing up when installed on the armature shaft. The circlip is installed on the top of the armature, and then the cup is raised up so that the circlip rests on the interior ledge of the cup about half way down. With this orientation the bendix gear rises full...

    Which end is up

When I took my electric start apart, I didn't notice the orientation of the cup that sits under the circlip at the top of the armature shaft. The cup has a thick wall about half way up the interior of the cup. I installed it with the cup facing down so that the spring on the shaft is...

    Starting motor damage

Is the cup at the top of the armature shaft supposed to slide over the circlip? In this picture, the cup stops at the circlip and I think this might be preventing the pinion gear from rising to the proper height

    Starting motor damage

I haven't got back to the boat yet but I have two more questions. What is the purpose of the vertical post circled in red in the picture, it snapped off my starter and was embedded in the engine cover? The second question is about the black covering, pointed to by the green arrow in the picture...

    Starting motor damage

The battery has been charged but I didn't load test it.
