97 Evinrude 115 hp E115GLEUA prop shaft question

After looking up the correct prop shaft for the above model, I ordered one and it was a smaller diameter than what I have. Did some investigation and there is mention of small gear box vs large gear box in some forums but the part breakout on this site doesn't show two options. so I ordered what was an equivalent part here ( 22419 GLM) and it was smaller diameter.

What is the correct part number for this model if GLM-22419 is not correct? I've tried multiple searches with no success

Thanks in advance
Marc

Shows 2 different gear cases depending if you have a 20 or 25" motor. Is your gearcase original? Maybe call SEI as they make both prop shafts.

I am not the original owner of the boat but I believe it is the original and the 'L' indicates a 20" engine so that is the part I ordered. Should have been fine but wasn't. Tried looking into it more and that's when I ran into this large hub vs small hub business. Also, not sure if this is related but what I have is a 'Batwing' lower unit.

If you can't find the right one, call Tim's Outboard Hackensack MN 2186822331. They probably have a nice used one. Mike, Dan, Theresa, Calley. Family business started 55 years ago.
I buy lots of parts from them. Very very nice business.

A V-6 lower unit might have been fitted.----Yes they do fit !-----So is the thread for the prop nut fine or coarse ?----Post pictures or tell us if threads are different pitch on the replacement smaller diameter propshaft.

Prop shaft has a wobble from something that previous owner did. Seals were compromised ended up replacing lower unit. Now I want to rebuild this one.

Prop nut fits both. Coarse threads. Diameter of one that is installed now is slightly larger.
I don’t know what they hit but notice the twist in the splines.

Picked up " scrap " gearcases with twist in the splines.----They hit submerged objects.---Propshaft is likely bent , thus the wobble on it.------Pinion gear and forward gear are likely damaged from impact.----You might not be able to see that damage.

Some metal shavings on the drain plugs which I why I’d like to rebuild it. Have one as spare. Almost 30 yr old motor so spare parts is a good thing

New factory parts are scary expensive.------Those lower units with the 2 tabs to position the propshaft bearing carrier are NOT robust in my opinion.----Earlier gearcases were better.

The propshafts on the "batwing" units are different dimensions than a standard V-4 gearcase. The GLM shaft you bought is for a standard case wand will not work

Do you know the part number for the ‘batwing’ prop shaft? That’s what I’m having trouble finding

Update: In trying to remove the prop shaft (I was able to get the PN off of it 436834) I removed the bearing housing, pinion gear, put shift rod all the way down (reverse), removed shift rod. Thought the entire shift assembly should come out with the prop shaft according to the YouTube vid but not happening. Prop shaft has about an inch of so of play the hits something. Seems like shift assembly may be stuck or I'm not removing one more thing to prevent it from being extracted. Any help is appreciated

Also, pinion gear is trashed. PN is for the gear set. Forward gear looks fine. Is there a PN for just the the pinion gear?
Thanks

These are matched parts.----Pinion gear is not available separately.----And the new pinion gear must be set up with special tool to determine correct shimming !!-----With shift pushed all the way down it should pull out easily.

I have often said that these lower units on the 60 degree loopers are NOT robust.----See many with gearcases coming to a " dynamic halt " and scrapped.

Thanks for the response. I'll try some heat and give it another go. May end up scrapping this thing but not quite there yet

'L' typ model identifier for 'long shaft's. A contributor early in thread mentions two types 20" and 25", you added that yours is 20", so bit of a head scratcher?? If the L does in fact correlate to long shaft then 25" would be correct model for parts.

Also Mercury did not start putting the HP and shaft length on Engine serial decal till the late 1990'. Before that was just serial numbers

137----fazt is right and right on the money again !
True, but as my last comment points out, Mercury, specifically Mariner at least, were the only manufacturer to use L in the model code to indicate long shaft length. If you look at his graphic the L actually is a short shaft compared to the X and Z which are longer shafts by 5-10 inches. So L is code for shorter than X-Y-Z, I doubt the engineers were in agreement, had to be a marketing ploy.

So , 137 why do you argue ?----The Johnson models in say 1966 used an L to designate the long shaft models.----And if you look up for the 1957 models you will also see the L for the long shaft models !!

I'm not arguing, and it's not a contest about who's right, because I know fazt is a pro with way more knowledge than I. I will be the first to admit a correction or misinterpretation, doesn't even bother me, because the important thing here is to get valuable and correct info to people's inquiries. I value and trust Fazt's opinion/knowledge and welcome it esp when I've made an error. This was my intention in my original post, the info confused me, I said if in fact it does correlate for a reason, because I wasn't quite sure...never pretending to know something or argue and I doubt fazt interpreted my post as combative, at least I hope not.
