2000 honda bf50 starter drive.

Hi,
The armature and field coil assembly are both still available along with the brushes...item 12 in link.

Lots of time a failing starter motor can be brought back to life by cleaning or turning the commutator and installing a new set of brushes and maybe the brush springs...item 13

An automotive electric shop could "growl" your armature for shorts...item 4... and then turn and undercut the commutator segments for you if it growls ok.

Sometimes a "light rebuild" like that can get years more out of an original starter for not too much money.

Good luck

The starter drive is listed as NLA.----Parts availability for newer motors is an issue.-----Google the part # and see if someone (E-bay ) has one.

If buying from yumbo, make dang sure it's actually the correct part as shipping back and forth due to an error would be very expensive.

Good luck

.ya it looks like aftermarket starters are readily available in all price ranges ..... all I really need is a drive or bending.... and it looks like drives are available.... the trouble is having confidence in fit

Well, I hear you. That's mucho dinero to spend on the clutch only to find out it won't fit. But, I'm guessing that it will. The link below is for a 2006 50A starter motor and everything looks exactly the same as the 2000 year model.

Not having the Honda parts catalog to decipher the reason that the part number was changed, I can't be certain but it seems that it may just be an inventory supercession. They do that when they contract a different manufacturer to supply the exact same part. But.I don't KNOW for sure.

If you do decide to buy the clutch, I recommend also replacing the Stopper Set...item 5...and closely inspecting the flywheel for any sign of damage.

Good luck.

Update .... still have not found a drive that would for sure fit.
In the mean time I pulled the drive to do measurements... and the drive felt fine as far as not feeling rough or worn .... and started thinking that the grease may have started to dry out... over 25 years old... so put it in varsol for a few hours.
The one way clutch would not hold 1 in five times ..... so far has worked great ... grabs every time

Sounds like you got.it!

COOL BEANS!

IT'S TRUE!

Dried grease can get hard like glass!

But who woulda thunk it????

Thanks for updating.
