Tilt & Trim

I have a 2000 Tohatsu 40 hp and the t&t stopped working. The trim motor works fine. I have opened the relief valve to manual and purged the air out several times. When I lift the motor up and down I only get resistance at the top and bottom of the stroke. It seems to be nothing in the middle. and when I turn the relief valve back to power the motor will slowly leak back down. Can somebody help on this. Thanks

Based on what you are describing, the most likely issue is an internal hydraulic leak in the trim and tilt unit. This is commonly caused by worn or damaged O-rings or piston seals inside the cylinder, or possibly a leaking check valve in the valve body.

The manual relief valve is also worth checking to make sure it is fully closing and sealing properly, but since the unit slowly bleeds down under power, that typically points more toward internal seal bypass rather than air in the system or an adjustment issue.

In most cases, this type of problem ends up requiring an O-ring and seal rebuild of the trim/tilt cylinder.
