Thread repair

I removed steering cable today to clean it up. When I went back to fasten the cable, I am able to get few turns and then it skips. Threads are corroded and there is some damage to them. What are my options, can the treads be repaired?

Hi,

Just my opinion, but I would opt for replacement. It's kinda/sorta like a lifeline...
...if it fails at a critical moment...
...when you need it the most...
...not good!

There may be more corrosion under the sheath/housing that you can't see.

A pain and expense I know but consider the consequences of what might happen. Especially if you boat with family aboard and double that if you're passing by mine!

Good luck.

I agree, it's replacement time. 😩
You may be able to get it to work but, as jgmo said, what could happen if it failed while you were out on the water [at speed]? 😬

It's a 7/8-14 thread die, I've cleaned up a number of them without issues. If the nut on the cable is damaged, you'll have to replace the cable.

You would need to list year and model or horsepower before anyone could answer your last question. Do you have/know the frame number (also called vin number)?

Is the nut on the cable damaged?----Or threads on the tilt tube?
Threads on the tube, seems like starting one, rest seem to be ok, just lot of junk in them. Hard to see how nut looks like. Tried to take it of the cable, but it will not slide back, gets stuck.

Your tilt shaft/tube is part number
50381-ZY9-000
See number 18 in the link below;

Pretty pricey but fully functional and boats.net always has a much better price than dealers. Plus, the parts ARE genuine Honda parts.

Note that the nut, bushings, washers and cap are sold separately but do all look to be available. Items 14, 17, 39, 40, 43, 53 in the link.

The reason that you may have had problems finding parts is that Honda lists your frame number as a 2007 model and not a 2006.

There is no listing for any 2006 BF90D outboards. Only A models.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Thank you very much for all the detail, especially about the year and model.

Just reporting back — I was able to save it. Totally saved it. A lot of people said it couldn’t be done, but I wasn’t in a hurry, I was patient, very patient. Penetrating oil, WD-40, rust remover, wire brush, file, and finally just a tiny touch with the die — very precise, very smart.

And it worked out beautifully. Really beautifully. Some would say more beautifully than anyone has ever seen before. :)
