I just bought this boat. Got it in the water, ran great for 30 to 45 minutes then we were just putting along and it bogged out and motor shut down. All gages were fine temp, oil pressure voltage. Now just cranks but wont stsrt st all. Had to get towed off the lake. Paid marine mechanic 2100$ to go over the boat for me so this wouldn't happen and it did. Any directions for help is most appreciated

Being a 96 LX means it's a carb motor and has either a 2 or 4 bbl carb, Either a TB4 or TB5 ignition (most likely a TB5), and can have an Alpha or Bravo drive

When the motor died did it do it real quick as the key turned it off or spurted?

It has a 4 balance. The ignition say its a thunderbolt ignition. It started and ran like a top. Didn't get on it hard at all. Ran 45 minutes great then we were just cruising low rpm and it just like bogged out then shut off. Let it sit for an hour and it fired back up but then booged and shut off. Went down today just to see if it would start and nothing. Its not getting fuel. Im not a mechanic by any means. I called someone when it stopped and they walked me thru seeing if it may be the lube oil sensor or the temperature sensor on the motor. Disconnected thise things and still nothing

Is there gas in it? Just because the gauge says so, does not necessarily mean there is, especially on a new to you boat

Don't know what 4 balance is
I'm thinking fuel issue right now

Being you have an LX I'm finding mechanical fuel pump, again serial numbers will verify

Get someone to help
Remove the flame arrestor to where you can see down the throat or the carb. Manually hold open the choke and get someone to pump the throttle. Your looking for squirts of gas going down the carb. If it doesn't squirt, crank the motor for 10 seconds and try again. If still no squirts you have a fuel issue. If you see gas, then need to look at ignition

I appreciate your input. Like I said I am not a mechanic at all. I bought it then paid a marine mechanic over 2k to go thru it. He said he did a tune up , replaced the bellows. I asked him to go thru it and whatever it needed fix so when I took it out it wont break down. Its a old boat. I know things break. But it broke down first trip out. It ran great till it didn't lol. I found a guy at the marina today that is supposedly the guy.

No gas getting to carburetor. One thing I didnt do that the mechanic told me to do. He told me to run the gas that was in the tank out before I fill it up with new gas. It had a little over a 1/4 tank. A friend of mine said to put sea foam gas stabilizer which i did. Could that have something to do with it. The fuel that was in there was from last season. I live in ohio the boat is on lake erie.

No gas getting to carburetor.
With no gas getting to carb the amount or kind of fuel you have has nothing to do with the current problem.

You have something clogged up as in carb, antisiphon valve, fuel filter, collapsed fuel line or a bad fuel pump. My initial thought is the fuel filter or fuel pump

We could get into what to do and try to find the problem, but your comment about not being a mechanic sort of tells me you don't to do it. If that's not correct we can start advising.

Im not a mechanic. But i am mechanically inclined. I just never got into working on motors. Ive been a union electrician for 34 years I like to think im not a complete idiot lol. The boat is docked at a marina in Cleveland ohio I will be back up there on Saturday. Can I reach out to you on Saturday when I am in front of the motor? I really appreciate you time and help

Most likely yes, but I live on a lake and if it's not raining I might be boating ;)

Take a coffee can, clear container, rags, small gas can and funnel, and maybe another fuel filter

Remove the fuel filter (filter should be new) and place coffee can under it to catch the gas if it spills. Dump the contents of the filter into a clear container and see if there is nothing but clear clean gas.

If filter was full when removed and gas is clean, refill the filter from can and reinstall.

If filter was not full need to check the antisiphon valve on the tank. It's a barbed fitting that the rubber gas line connects to tank which goes to filter.

If filter is not new and gas is dirty, replace filter

If filter is full, gas is clean remove gas line on carb and put in container. Crank motor to see if you see any gas coming out
