No Spark 1999 Johnson 150

I posted this as a reply instead of my own thread, trying to do it right. So, I have no spark, (used a test light between plug and wire on two different plugs). I have checked neutral and kill switches as best I could with a meter. Original issue was no spark. Based on recommendation from threads I replaced the stator. Cleaned the flywheel magnets, (one was partly fractured), made sure there were no corroded connections. Originally motor would start and run intermittently. Has not been dependable since purchase a year ago. After replacing the stator, engine will not even act like it wants to start. Motor RPM's while cranking: 700, needle steady. I know the neutral switch on the control box works, motor will not turn over with engine in gear. When running at full speed, motor died like turning the key off. Brought boat home, after a couple of days it cranked and ran. All through the winter, I would start the motor every two weeks, run for about fifteen minutes. It has always been a bear to get started but once warmed up, would start with less than 20 seconds of turning over. Non-ethanol since purchase, auto oiler disconnected, stabil marine always used, 1999 Johnson fast strike 150hp #XP1XMO158210, S # NC00009561. I don't know what to check next. How do I check the key switch, I have a new one here I can use to replace old one if needed.

This should help

Please post your model number from your transom bracket, it will start with J150xxxxx. I'm pretty sure in 1999 the Johnson 150's were only carbureted 60 degree engines with the OIS2000 ignition system, but by posting your model number it will help to be certain.

If you have the OIS2000, go to Page 72 of the CDI Electronics Troubleshooting Guide. This will give you step by step instructions for diagnosing your spark issues rather than just replacing parts. Use an air gap spark tester to verify if you have no spark at all, spark on only one bank, or spark on a single cylinder. These three conditions each have different diagnosis steps.

These engines should be very easy to start, they were the smartest carbureted engines of the time. My 1996 Evinrude 150 starts within 5 seconds every time from cold and once warm pops off as soon as the key is turned. It sounds like you may have carb and/or fuel system issues to correct, but first get the no spark condition solved then you can track down the fuel delivery problems.

For a cold start, squeeze the fuel primer bulb until firm and make sure the engine is fully tilted down. Turn the key to start and when it starts to crank push in and hold the key to active the primer solenoid. Within a few seconds the engine should fire and you can let go of the key. If your port temperature switch is working properly then your Quick Start feature should be functioning. This feature advances timing 10 degrees until the engine warms up and the port temp switch reads 100 degrees, then it backs down to standard timing. It also kicks in for every start for about 5 seconds even when warm. If none of this is happening then you may have other issues to track down as well.

The "J" number is non-existent on this motor. No tag anywhere on the rocker arm or mounting bracket. The numbers I listed were the only numbers I can find, and they were under the power pack cover on the powerhead. I will open everything up again today and try a couple of things.
When the motor would start, the idle rpm you describe was working as it should. After running for about 2-3 minutes, the engine rpm's would decrease and settle into a nice even rhythm. It does have the OSI 2000 optical ignition system. When I replaced the stator, I cleaned the optical pick-ups under the rotor cap on top of the flywheel with alcohol and a cotton swab, greased the starter, spark advance plate, etc. looked for cracked/deteriorating wires, made sure all screws/bolts were tight. I am a lot more mechanical than electrical minded so of course all my problems are electrical. Thanks for the help and manual!

Update. So, I put a spark tester on one of the plugs before I did anything else. Turned key, motor started immediately. No choke, no bulb press, no water. Shut engine down, connected water, removed spark tester, it started immediately again. Started and stopped motor several times and it restarted each time after about 5-10 seconds, no choking, no bulb pressing. So, why would it not start yesterday? My opinion and assumption for all of this: stator was bad as was stated in threads, (thank you very much). During disassembly to replace stator, throttle had to be opened to get to some screws. I do not have a fuel cut-off valve, therefore with the high ambient temperature, I flooded the carbs. After sitting overnight, the fuel dissipated allowing motor to start with very little effort. I am grateful to those that take the time to help, I will try to do my part and help as well. Any rebuttals to my assumptions will be welcomed. Until something breaks....
