1999 BF50 Propeller Fitment

Hello!

When I bought this motor it had no propeller. I bought a used one from eBay that was supposedly the right part #. Well, it appears to be wrong.

I believe I have a BF50AXLRTA.

When installed, and the prop is against the splined spacer, there's a big gap between the prop and the lower unit. The prop can slide back and rub on the lower unit. Unfortunately I didn't notice this in my rush to get out on the water and it damaged the prop and lower unit.

Am I missing another spacer that goes behind the prop? Or is this just the wrong propeller?

See attached .

After further investigation, you were right that I'm missing #16 in the diagram. Parts ordered.

I also ordered a cheapo propeller to get me by for a few trips and the comparison is shocking. I'm lucky things didn't go wrong out on the water. Now I'm curious how much material I lost from the lower unit...

Weeeeell....

....I hate to say this to you...and....

....I sincerely HOPE that I'm wrong...

....I often am after all.

But in your first photo at the top of the the thread, it looks as if the portion of the gearcase that the propshaft holder bolts to is no longer there!
I also don't see the holder retainer bolts OR the end flange of the propshaft holder where the bolts go through!

However, if that is actually true, I have NO explanation for how you could have been using the outboard because I would think that MOST of the transmission would simply fall out and sink the INSTANT you put it in reverse. It would also make one HECK of a racket in forward gear that you couldn't have possibly missed and not stopped to investigate!

So... ...again... ...I hope that isn't correct and that my old eyes and mind are playing tricks!

You can Google "Honda outboard motor photos" and there are sites selling pictures of outboards where you might find a sample shot of what that area on the outboard is supposed to look like.

Good luck.

Well, after looking at the parts page I sent you, it does appear that I was WRONG about the propshaft holder and bolts.
It looks like your outboard has a different gearcase than the one I was thinking of. NO BOLTS, NO FLANGE.

My confusion stems from what I believe is that Honda used.Mercury gearcases in the early days of some of their outboard models and I have never seen one of those in person.

Your propshaft holder is held in by a large nut with external threads. So, disregard my mistaken "musings" in post #6 of this thread. The penalty I pay for "shooting from the hip" so to speak.

I really can't say if  any damage occurred due to the missing thrust washer, Maybe nothing significant at all might be the case. I don't know.

Due to the much longer hub of your latest replacement prop's hub though, be very observant and cautious about how it fits before running it.

Sorry for any confusion I may have caused you.

Good luck.

Hey, I appreciate the warning - it made me inspect the lower unit closer. I've attached a close-up of mine and a screenshot of an ebay unit. The nut that contains everything in the lower unit definitely lost some material, as did the housing. At this point I doubt it would thread-out. It's looking like I may need to grab a used lower unit for peace of mind.

Yeah, it's hard to tell (for me) how much damage your case has suffered by looking at the photo.

It does look (to my old eyes) like there's still plenty of the retaining nut left but there could be fractures in it that can't be seen because of all the violent contact that was taking place.

If it did "Kit-Kat" (you know, "break me off a piece") ;) or backed out on you it would probably be ccimplete disaster and a tow back to port.

I  can say that I definitely would  not buy or install the unit in the ebay photo. That inner shaft support with the chunks broken out of it is a.deal killer for me. Both of the water seals press in at that location and they aren't there. I suspect that the damage may have been done removing them. I believe they would leak because of the damage if replaced. Running that case would probably be a bigger gamble than running the one you have. You can see the end of the needle bearing that supports the shaft in the photo and you can see that the damage to the support goes right up to it. A leak path right up to the inside of the case.

The difference would be that, if you tried the ebay one, you would likely know very quickly if it was no good after a run by draining the gear oil and finding the water I predict will be in there.

The one you have on there now might run forever as it is. Or, it could go several trips then BANG, just let go.

Anyway, just my opinion and you've already seen it's often flawed.

But hey! I'll offer you just a bit more, even such as it is...

The 50hp Honda has been one of the biggest successes for them in their history. If it runs great, it's probably worth the effort and money to find a better lower unit and gain that piece of mind you spoke of. Great outboards those and LOTS of them out there.

You might try calling Tim's Outboard Repair In Hackensack, MN.
218-682-2331 to see if they have one to sell.
Others here have bought parts from them and have reported back with good experiences.

And don't forget, your transmission is still good so you might get by finding a good empty case and using your internals.

However, I urge you to buy and read the Honda Shop Manual before attempting doing something like that.

Available from them here:

Don't waste your $$ on Seloc or Haynes or other knockoff manuals.

1/2 price equals less than half of what you're looking for.

Good luck.
