DF150A - Concern about Gearcase - What caused finish loss?

Considering purchase of tritoon with DF150A, but hesitating due to concerns about lower unit. Pic shows where finish has been compromised around gearcase. It looks like this on both sides.

Although the skeg appears similar in the pic, and it does have some finish loss, the upper portion of the skeg that is not visible in the pic retains glossy original finish. Sorry for the lack of pics, but basically, this finish loss is isolated to the exterior of the gearcase. I'm guessing it must have overheated at some point to have cause this. The fluid was black, smelled burnt, needed replacement, but did not have excess metal in it (a little powdery residue). I was told the engine has 41 hours use.

The dealer that has the boat will not allow an on-water test without a signed contract. On muffs, the unit will shift into forward and reverse and spin the prop without unusual noises. I'm scared to sign anything without knowing a little more about this issue.

Thanks for opinions.

I have never heard of a lower unit heating up enough to “cook” the paint, not saying it can’t happen. To me it looks like oxidation. Did you try rubbing it off? The only way it could overheat would be water intrusion or ran with no oil

No sea trial without a signed contract sounds fishy.

The 41 hours can be verified, ask to see the printout of the downloaded data from the ECM, it won’t have any data concerning the lower unit but will contain all the engine data including any alarms.

Hopefully other forum members will chime in re the overheated lower unit.

I've never seen anything quite like it. I tried rubbing, but it seems like it is a layer of finish missing, as opposed to a layer of oxidation on top.

If they haven't serviced the lower unit, I may check the oil level. I only checked its condition from the lower port, and it did seem a little "powdery" and black, but no significant metal shavings/debris/chunks.

Will request ECM data. Thanks for your response.

I went back with a little more aggressive approach to the finish, and I believe the discoloration may be on the surface. Still not sure why it's confined to the gearcase like that, but...... Thanks again, William.
