1999 Johnson 50 hp j50pleea - bearing carrier gets hung up about 1/8" from going in lower unit

I am putting new seals in lower unit - I took out bearing carrier and now I can't get it all the way back in. I probably moved the shift shaft from where it was when I took it out. It seems like I have tried everything but I am sure I am doing something wrong. Help!! Thanks everyone.

Ok I tried it a few times again and still no progress. I did this time by putting the reverse gear, race, needle bearing, and race on the back of the reverse gear. That allowed me to see that the reverse gear teeth are engaged with the pinion gear teeth but even so it still sticks out the same amount. Is it just a slightly smaller diameter so the the O-Ring on the carrier provides a real tight seal so you have to use a hammer and tap it in? Thanks

Also on the water pump I couldn't get the impeller on over the new key that came with the kit so I used the old key. Is that a bad idea?

Ok problem solved. For anyone that has my lack of brain power, it is slightly smaller inside the lower unit case at about the depth of the bearing carrier less 1/8th inch. As I mentioned before tapping it with the hammer wasn't working, so I used one of my woodworking clamps and put it on the front of the lower unit and the lower jaw on the exposed part of the carrier - a slight squeeze and it slipped right in! Problem solved.
