Removing Velvet Drive from 350 in CC 251

Hey folks. I have a 1975 Chris Craft Catalina Express with Crusader 350 and Velvet drive 10-17-004
I need to pull the trans to rebuild.
Anyone have best tips?
Does the engine need to be lifted up or can I remove just if the rear of engine is supported?
Also - any good recommendations on a qualified velvet drive rebuild shop?
(Oil cooler failed and it leaked water into the trans fluid)
I’m in Knoxville TN
Many thanks!
Brett

You can normally remove the gear with the rear of the engine supported...as long as there is enough space to move the gear away from the engine until the input shaft comes free of the damper plate...

Don't know of a place around Knoxville, guess for that matter never had one repaired by someone else and only did one myself a long time ago

As makomark mentioned support the rear of the motor. It's a straight drive so pulling the prop shaft away from the trans enough to gain clearance to remove. When trans is reinstalled the alignment should be .003 or less on the flange plate all around. Now would be a good time to look real close at the castle nut and packing, could upgrade to dripless if funds are available
