1987 Force 85HP Carb Adjustment Done Right

Howdy all.
I have recently picked up a Bayliner Bass Striker with an 85HP Force Outboard.
It is hard to cold start and I noticed when I push the key in for the choke the butterfly doesn't close to choke the engine. I messed with the adjustment a little and it doesn't seem to make any difference. The solenoid does pull them down a fraction, just not enough.

It will start on fogging oil and when it warms up it starts much easier until it cools.
I also am not sure how hot the top of the head should get around the plug area with my thermo to see if it is getting to hot.

I checked the tank, clean. I checked the fuel pump, seems to pump fine.

A side note: The compression on all three cylinders is at 105 p.s.i.

Thanks for any help given in this matter

Do I need to get the whole kit (FK1069 - Water Pump Kit) or do you think the impeller should be just fine?

Ok
I have the water pump kit. I was looking to do the install and noticed oil coming out of the tiny hole in this picture. Anyone know why it would leak oil out of here?

I’m having a problem with a 1987 Force 85. After cleaning the ignition mechanism, replacing the water pump, and tuning the engine, it ran flawlessly for two days on the water. After sitting for about a week, it started normally this weekend, ran for approximately 10 seconds, then suddenly backfired through the exhaust and stalled.

Since then, nearly every starting attempt has ended the same way: the engine runs briefly, a backfire is heard through the exhaust, and it stops.

I have checked:

- the spark plugs;
- the fuel pump;
- the ignition after removing the flywheel — everything appears normal;
- the carburetors — they are clean, free of debris, and the needles are not stuck.

Compression is 120 psi in each of the three cylinders.

What else should I check first? Experienced Force 85 owners, have you encountered a similar backfire through the exhaust followed by sudden stalling, and what was the cause?

Uhhh what?
When you push the ignition key in, the choke solenoid should receive 12 volts. In my case, I was only getting about 7 volts from the ignition switch, so the solenoid would only move slightly and didn’t have enough power to fully close the choke plates.

I installed a regular automotive relay. Now the ignition switch only activates the relay, and the relay sends a full 12 volts directly from the battery to the solenoid.

After that, the choke started working perfectly.
