Gasoline Vapors in the Salon

Thank you in advance for your help. I bought a 1994 Silverton with twin gasoline crusader engines that have just been rebuilt approximately 700 hours ago. The issue is a strong gasoline odor in the salon, there is no visible leaks, just an odor strong enough to make you sick to your stomach. And one have any past experience with this or suggestions on what I should be looking for to fix this problem. Thanks, Pat

Welcome
First you do have a gas leak just need to find out where it is, and smelling gas that bad you have a Bomb waiting to explode

If you fuel tank(s) are inside the hull the fuel might be soaking into the hull

Look close at the fuel fill and vent hoses, ethanol may damaged them

Thanks for the reply. i just bought the boat and both the owner and broker assured me the smell was normal for gasoline engines to have a smell being under the salon floor. when i say just bought i mean that i picked up the boat 48 hours ago. as the boat sits the smell dissipates but not entirely as you always have some smell. I am surprised that the surveyor never mentioned it upon inspection or sea trial. I'm going to fill the tanks in the a.m. run them for a short time. I want to know if the fuel smell is greater with full tanks vs. 1/2 full tanks. Replacing fuel lines is one thing, replacing the tanks is a whole other story.

Something is leaking. Do not add gas or run this floating bomb until it is figured out. Unless you are willing to bite the expense of putting new tanks in, seriously consider any way possible to negate the sale and return the boat

hopefully, the surveyor has one of the professional accreditations?? I'd discuss the situation with him and see if this is 'new'. There should be something clearly stated in the report if it existed when it was surveyed. Its possible some work was done and something was missed in the process.

nothing was done after the surveyor. boat is exactly the same. I intend to change all of the fuel lines as one does have an odor of gas. the tanks look to be in great shape, as well as most everything else.
