5.0 MPI exhaust manifold and riser temp

Popped out today to the mooring. Ran on idle and up to 1500 for about 20 mins. Didn't have time to go for a good run but the elbows were about 60-70f and the manifold ranged from 150-190f

5.0 MPI exhaust manifold and riser temp

Yeah, it's the top of the riser. The manifold below it had 2 full flow gaskets and that's what went back with the new ones.

5.0 MPI exhaust manifold and riser temp

What's the issue with the manifold installation?

5.0 MPI exhaust manifold and riser temp

You said the G gasket has a closed hole and a small hole. This is a picture of the one I took off. Open on the exhaust side and small hole on the water inlet/front side.

5.0 MPI exhaust manifold and riser temp

"Might look that way but no, the circulating water pump keeps water circulating around the block so there are no hot spots. Temp comes up and thermostat opens allowing hot to exit and cool to come in." That's what I meant. It looks like once the thermostat opens it allows flow into the top of...

5.0 MPI exhaust manifold and riser temp

Yeah, changed the impeller and also the back plate on the raw water pump.

5.0 MPI exhaust manifold and riser temp

Blue goes to the riser and red from the top of the thermostat housing to the bottom entry on the t drain on the manifold

5.0 MPI exhaust manifold and riser temp

I was looking at this diagram and it seemed to me the thermostat closed allowed water to recirculate until engine reached proper temp then opened and allowed flow to the lower hose of the manifold.

    5.0 MPI manifold t-drain failure

I'm hoping the issue was actually just a faulty new part. The build quality difference from the original OEM ones I took off to the new clone ones I put on was shocking. Didn't really pay much attention when changing them but side by side after the failure the old ones were nice tight fit bowls...

5.0 MPI exhaust manifold and riser temp

Open. Purely raw water cooled. Gaskets were identical to what came off. I've been trying to find a decent water flow diagram. It's a 2003 5.0 MPI. Am I right in thinking the thermostat housing recirculates until the temp opens it and then its diverted to the lower input hose of the manifold to...

5.0 MPI exhaust manifold and riser temp

Friend was out on his boat. Only just put new manifolds and risers on. All gaskets right and the flow restriction gasket in the right place. He was at idle for 15 mins and engine temp was 140ish on the gauge but he said the manifolds were really hot and the risers cold. I'm going out tomorrow...

5.0 MPI exhaust manifold and riser temp

What sort of temp should the exhaust manifold and riser run at? Does the riser or manifold get fed first?

    5.0 MPI manifold t-drain failure

Oh god yes, the starter motor. You'd have to break your spine in 3 places to contort into a position to remove that. I've warned my friend if the starter goes I'm changing my phone number.

    5.0 MPI manifold t-drain failure

I'm a diesel guy. Been working commercial boats for 40 yrs. Only doing this for a friend. Just find everything infuriating on these. Everything from the ridiculous mounting of the raw water pump to the inaccessible fuel cooler that needs the engine out to get to it because it's tight against the...

    5.0 MPI manifold t-drain failure

No. It was new. Replaced the riser and manifold last week with new t drain. Less than 20 mins runtime

    5.0 MPI manifold t-drain failure

Just thought a full flow ball valve would be just as easy to rod with a cable tie

    5.0 MPI manifold t-drain failure

Glad I caught it when I did. Had a momentary dip in revs. Stopped, lifted the lid and water was just touching the water pump and spraying everywhere. I'll try and convince the owner to strip out the single point drain. It's a cramped engine room but should be able to get to all the original...

    5.0 MPI manifold t-drain failure

This is the offending part that disassembled itself. I grabbed the old ones out of the bin and they seem like OEM parts and much better. I'll probably put them back. The bowl just clipped back on. The original 2 on the bench are much more solidly built.
