    Caught me! yes you undo the tab thru the hole in the LU, you have to remove the tab to access the nut underneath.

    That looks to me like a trim tab which you should be able to change - after you remove the lower unit.

    It's not the material that matters it's the pitch and diameter that keeps you in the max. rpm. Stainless doesn't flex as much as aluminum so the thrust is better.

    On the tops of the carbs there should be filter screens to trap sediment if they're plugged they hurt flow. remove them and check/clean.

    I have i think a 1970's murcury 85 horse that turns over but wont start. The control arm that turns the distributor to advance the timing wont move.

    The cable might be seized and/or the distributor adapter needs greasing. Use a light grease if you use a heavy one it won't turn.

    See that symbol after the part Nr. it looks like the Briggs and Stratton logo, maybe they supplied the flywheel/ignition components.

    Mercury put this in the manual so you can go "oh my God", notice that they mention prop pitch.

    1967 650, hard to turn over but not seized. Prop turns when I manually turn engine. Potentially stuck in drive?

    Check the wiring especially the cables to the starter and ground.

    Second step is buying a tach to see what rpm you are hitting; should be 5,500 or so @ full throttle; (this is on the high side which will help with weight) - setting the motor at the proper angle will help.

    Idle screws are set at 1 1/4 turns out in forward in water underway set them up first then go into the water.

    Hook up the tank line, tip the motor all the way up and pump the ball the old gas will be pushed out of the lines/carb. Tip back down and run normally.

    The bearing carrier is probably corroded in place to remove it some guys soak the whole thing in ATF and penetrating oil for a while. Heating the housing also helps.

    Do you mean that there's only 6" exposed? if so cut all the bad wires and strip the outer cover back until you find good ones then solder those ones. If you can find a Mercury dealer near you maybe you can pick up a box.

    How much slack do you have in the wiring? If you have a foot or more of good cable just solder the new wire on to the switch, choke and neutral safety switch. The only place I've seen that type is on ebay. Mercury has a manual for the controls called "MerControls".
