    “Pre alpha” leak

The O-ring distorts and fits into the area as well as it can, but since the back edge isn't smooth, it may hold pressure for awhile, just not for long. Use denatured Alcohol to remove the sealant, especially if it was Perfect Seal or something like the Permatex mentioned before. Be careful...

mercruiser shift cable install tool to help it tthru the bellow

Yes, it does, but I remembered that the V-P kits came with Glycerine from working at the boat dealership and since I had some in my garage, I didn't need to search.

mercruiser shift cable install tool to help it tthru the bellow

I don't remember exactly (because it was several years ago), but I think I wrapped some tarp tape around the end to ease the edge, then put some Glycerine on it to lubricate. Glycerine is the lube hat comes with Volvo-Penta raw water pump kits and it won't damage metal or rubber. Woodworking...

    4.3 Mercruiser - randomly dies

As I mentioned, my small Craftsman slip joint pliers make it easy and I can go in from many angles in cramped compartments. If I had a dollar for every boat I worked on for a no start problem with loose wing nuts......

    Did you make that?

    Shifting to Neutral for starting

I lubed mine with Quicksilver 2-4-C but that was because I needed to disassemble for replacing the shift cable. Mine is an '84 4 Winns, so it was overdue for clean & lube.

    4.3 Mercruiser - randomly dies

True, but the battery manufacturers could save money by omiotting the nuts. OTOH, that will give dealers something else to biatch about (as if they need something else). They often have the larger posts posts too, but the threaded studs are great for adding low current accessories if the boat...

    4.3 Mercruiser - randomly dies

I think someone should tell the battery manufacturers- I still see new marine batteries with wing nuts. Wing nuts are OK for low current but I have seen a lot loosen form vibration, so I usually tighten them with a small slip joint pliers.

Can you post a photo of the shifter?

    4.3 Mercruiser - randomly dies

Just an FYI- the Coast Guard doesn't like wing nuts and even NyLock nuts can be a problem if they become excessively hot- the plastic ring can melt and stop gripping the stud. Nuts with a star washer or serrated head work best.

Does it seem to be running rich when it shuts off?

Can you post the engine serial number? I can't read it in the photo.

Did you or they add gas? And how are they charging you for this?

    4.3 Mercruiser - randomly dies

Loosen the fuel filler cap- if it starts and remains running, it could be caused by the vent being clogged. Don't start an engine dozens of times, especially in a short time- you'll kill your starter. How long did those mechanics run it?

Looking for tips pulling a VP Gen V engine out of boat

The alignment will have more play if the whole mount comes out- if the nut is removed, the play is limited by the hole size be stud. An alignment tool is available but you may be able to rent one. A yoke from a sterndrive would work too, as long as it's known to be straight.

    Water in Oil

Did you add anything to the oil, to make it easier to remove water in tight areas? When I worked for a Mastercraft dealer, someone from MC or Indmar tech suport told me he had recovered many boats that had submerged and he used to add a bit of Kerosene, run it and drain the oil again. Said it...

    Water in Oil

Has it hydroloked before? I'm going to add some tools to the kit I carry in my boat- I'm not really worried that it will hydrolock, but just about anything is possible, even though I installed a new shutter when I did the other work.

    Water in Oil

Cheap may work, but I wouldn't trust it if the engine hasn't been drained of water before drawing it in. The 2nd and 3rd dealerships I worked for bought AF in bulk and loose gallons- we were required to drain all inboard and sterndrives- the 2nd used purple AF and we had a refractometer to check...

Looking for tips pulling a VP Gen V engine out of boat

Depends on the engine compartment, seating and how far back it is from the back of the seats. Hopefully, they designed the boat so removing the engine isn't impossible. If it looks like the photo below, I don't think it will be too bad- the engine cover-rear seat will need to be removed, as...
