05 Mercury 50hp tack problems

hello I am new here, I am having a problem with my tack guage.When i turn the key over the tack jumps then it dies,I have been told I need to run a countinuity test on the rectifire.I have a multimeter and I am needing someone to explain to me how to do it if they could..Thanks for any help..

What does the tach read with the motor running?

It never comes on ,when you tuen the motor over it just jumps and when it starts up , it goes to zero dont do nothin like its dead..

what does the voltmeter read with the engine running?

Test your rectifier/regulator.

the volt guage reads 12 volts around that ...with the motor running
