Aquamatic 250 Shift Clunk

When shifting from neutral to forward, my outdrive engages with a clink. Shifting into reverse is smooth. Is this detrimental? Is there an adjustment for this?

This clunk is a result of slack in the suspension fork's contact with the set pin.
Usually, the clunk is more pronounced when engaging REV.
For this drive, a certain amount is considered normal.

You may want to look at the "Latch Hooks" and see if there is excessive wear at/near the tips of them where they grab the set pin.
Also check to see if the return spring is lifting the mechanism up correctly and fully.
The "lift-out" unit "vice rod" must also be fully retracted, so that the push rod is not applying any pressure to the release action of the latch unit.
Engine RPM is another consideration. Keep this within OEM specs.

In a long stretch here..... the sliding sleeve/FWD gear cup may be grabbing too abruptly.
To correct this, the transmission will need to be removed and taken apart.
The sliding sleeve and cups would then be very carefully lapped to one another.

Correct and clean gear oil is important also.
For the 250 s/p drive, this would be 30 W engine oil.
