I have a 1997 Mariner 15hp 2 stroke throttle shift outboard. Runs like a champ, but will not shift.
I've popped off the connection to the shift rod from the throttle linkage and installed a manual shift handle. That works, but the shifting is still binding. For testing I removed the linkage clip and pin from the shift shaft to the shifting rod and the shifting rod will easily shift from manually raising or lowering the shift rod.
The problem appears to be that the 2-3" square shift shaft passing under the power head is binding. I'd like to remove the shift shaft and clean out any residue that must be binding up the works, lubricating and then re-installing, but I am uncertain how to do this without damaging anything. Haven't found a service manual that can advise on the correct procedure.
Any help out there?
Thanks, Jim H <[email protected]>
