Chrysler 360 Inboard Stalling

Hello all..prepare for a long post, I want to try and be as accurate as possible. I’ve had a strange ongoing problem with my starboard engine stalling at odd times. At first it was once or twice over a span off a season, now it is happening more frequently. The motor starts up, runs good, oil and temp are good and will go 30 miles with no problem at my cruising speed. Sometimes (especially after I get off cruising speed) it will run rough, stall and not start. Slight odor of fuel (but that may be me trying to re-start it). I get to my destination, anchor for a few hours and it will start right up.

At first it was only happening at one location. I leave my harbor and idle for 5 minutes, get up to about 2800 rpm’s for 20 min, idle for another 5 and that’s when it would stall. Would not happen going to any other location, so I assume it’s the distance. Recently it’s happening more frequently, such as leaving my mooring and going to the fuel dock (100 yards) or going to the service dock from my mooring (400 yards). Then it might not happen at all for several trips.

I’m not a mechanic, I’m a parts changer. My mechanic moved from the area, and not many people are available or willing to work on older motors so I’m in a bind. It’s also hard to diagnose as it’s not happening all the time, for a mechanic to come out and look. I navigate narrow uncharted inlets, and losing one motor near shoaling is a real pain. I’m also a bit ignorant to ignition systems (which many have said is the culprit) and the testing to diagnose. I’m enclosing pics to show what I have.

I have changed the plug wires and control module. I’m changing the plugs this weekend. The carb has been rebuilt a few years ago. I took it to a carb guy and he went over it, said it was totally fine. Ran the engine off an external tank.

Looking for any help at all, this has been ongoing for a while. Thanks in advance.

I am guess the external tank made no difference?

If so, that does imply the ignition and that could be electrical. My first hunch is that the wiring appears to be original and could have an intermittent connection (due to age/corrosion/etc). You can start trouble shooting by doing a 'wiggle test'...with the engine running wiggle move all connectors in the harness that have ignition wiring (ballast resistors are known to fail intermittently) ...if they are ok, move up the harness to the dash. If that doesn't should the culprit, I'd separate the harness connectors and apply connector cleaner (CRC spray can ) or Nyogel...

I think you observation about 'distance' is really run time and could be coupled to heat...big thing is that it appears to have increased in frequency - to me that means it is getting worse, not better...
