Correct OEM Service and Parts Manuals

Hello-
I recently (7-4-26) purchased a new 2026 Ranger VX1888WT with a new 225HP ProVS V8.

Motor: Mercury 225HP ProXS - Serial #: 3B605480

I would like to purchase the CORRECT and CURRENT Service and Parts Manuals for said motor.

Mercury website, a couple of Mercury forums, Gemini, etc. have provided various part numbers.

These are the part numbers that were produced upon research:

Part #s for Service manuals: 8M0227198; 8M0124302; and 8M0182078 .

Part #s for Parts Manuals: 90-841916R01and 8M0145604

Please assist with the MOST current OEM Mercury Service and Parts Manuals part#s.

Congratulations on your new boat. Please read the owners manual that came with the motor cover to cover and ask about anything you don't understand. I work the service/parts counter for a dealer and wow the amount of money and grief that new boat owners would save is amazing if only they would do this!


8M0227198 is the newest engine service manual, the other two you posted are old superseded numbers. $97.50 in stock
8M0145604 is the parts manual, 841916R01 is an old (2005) service manual. $21.50 - currently out of stock until 8/3/26
I would also highly recommend you also order 8M0182076. This is the diagnostics manual for your engine $97.50 in stock

p.s. the mercury consumer website -- https://www.mercurymarine.com/us/en -- will have almost the same parts breakdowns that the dealer sees.

edit; these numbers are for 225 proxs with a conventional midsection
advanced midsection might be different.

Thanks for the feedback. I’ve read about 1/2-3/4 of the owners manual so far. Very thorough manual.

I do have a few questions…

1. Not real clear on motor tilt for short term storage.

Example: How is motor to be tilted when stored in my garage from 1 day to 14 days between use?
I will be using the boat year round.

One section talks motor tilt for long term winter storage; the other section discusses motor tilt when in the water (image shows boat in water).

Note: I do have the 5.44 gear case with 1.75:1 ratio.

2. Engine oil:

SAE 10W/30 appears to be the preferred oil with SAE 25W/40 acceptable.

When is 10/30 preferable ?
When is 10/40 preferable ?

Is ambient temp the deciding factor?

I live in the SoCal desert so temps are usually mild to hot year round. Rarely ever freezes.

Also… is the diagnostic manual useful for the DIYer (ability to change engine oil, gear case oil, water pump, fuel filters, etc) or is better suited for a tech who has specialized tools for diagnosing?
 
Great questions!

#1. The section that shows the boat in the water, is for people who leave the boat in the water. You should be trimming slightly up like this when you are in the water and the engine isn't running, like when you're using the trolling motor to fish or tied up to a dock grabbing a bite to eat. By the time you get home after boating the oil in the cylinders will have drained back to the crankcase because you had the motor tilted during trailering, so you should trim the motor down as far as possible to allow any water to drain out and let the water passages dry as much as they can once the boat is parked.

2. Ambient temp is part of it, the other part is how hard you will be working the engine. If you look at the Sea Pro (basically all the same internal engine parts as your engine) they recommend the 25/40. This is because most Sea Pro buyers work their engines pretty hard.
With you being in SoCal, I would recommend the 25/40 once you get thru with break in. I also recommend that you don't "baby" the engine during break in. Run it just like the owners manual recommends. I highly recommend that you do the first oil, filer and lower unit lube change at 20 hours and switch the the synthetic blend at that time.

Yes, I still would recommend the Diagnostic manual for a DIYer. The two manuals work together (some important info is in one and some info is in the other) and there are more then a few tests that can be done with common and/or fairly cheap tools.

Here is a video someone sent me. It shows that some tests are pretty easy for a DIY. Also shows that resistance tests are one of the most unreliable tests a tech does.
