Engine block gasket

My son and I are putting his 1984 Merc 150hp XR2 Black Max back together. The cork gasket that sits in the groove between the two halves of the block has an adhesive backing on one of the narrow edges. Which surface of the groove in the block half does that adhesive edge go? If we put it to the bottom of the groove, the gasket is quite tall and does not fill the width of the groove. If we put the adhesive edge to either the inside or outside walls of the groove, the gasket does fill the groove, but doesn't stick up very high. Which way is correct?

Glue to the bottom. when halve are mated and tightened cork will crush and fill groove.
