F90 not even a click

Hi,

New to forum. Two years ago, my wife's cousin (who lives next door) bought himself a new pontoon boat....gave us his prior boat. So I know the history, Know that "when he parked it, it worked"

LAST summer, did nothing with it. Decided to get it working this spring. Hook up battery, nothing, not even a click. Buy new battery. Not even a click (nor did the engine raise/lower system make a noise)

With pride & ego on full display, it must be the starter...no worries. Order a replacement. It arrived three months ago however, as my wife beat my ego & bravado back to the mush it evidently is, I've spent the last several months of weekends helping her with her estate sale acquisitions and then fixing and then carrying to another town to try to sell. (I ONLY have weekends to do anything so doing that kills everything for me)

Ok, so today with bruised bravado.... I put replacement starter back on. Where's the battery? Oh yeah, I took it out because my backhoe battery died so I borrowed it until I can buy replacement for backhoe.

Today, just to tinker around, looked at plugs. Look in nice shape (didn't measure gap) color is light tan. Oil looks clean BUT, will ultimately be changed since it's couple years old. Can't get screw off for water inlet at bottom of engine (had too large screwdriver so left it be)

Turn key, some gauges on dash move....so it's getting some kind of power. Hit the trim button..... "click" and that's all. Hit trim up and down....only got clicks. Ok, so go turn the key and 100% nothing. It's like the boat is trying to further crush my machismo.

(for background, I've worked on my industrial backhoe, lawn mower, 150 hp tractor, cars.... for over 50 years but I've never touched a boat engine until this. All to say yes, my wife might be right in that I might be a moron (she'd prefer to use jackazz) but I'm at least one that's not totally ignorant around tools)

I've got a service manual F90D SERVICE MANUAL *LIT186160286 6D8-28197-1G-11 if that enlightens.

Now I just got a hair brained idea that I might try to jump the starter straight to the battery to see if it at least burps. With NO lead on battery, I thought I'll connect the lead first to the starter then just touch it to the battery. When the lead (starter cable) clamped onto the starter nut / post, it wiggled and I suppose touched the body and.................. there was a small, very quick spark.

So that accidently and implicitly tells me it's getting power at the starter.

Decided to try to reach out for ideas.
 
Correction, the boat's leads WERE on the battery, I was presuming there was a short between the two so went to jump it. So the terminal WAS hot when I touched the (ungrounded) lead to the post.
