Kamd42 vs Kad43

I recently bought a 94 tiara 3100 w twin kamd42’s which, I’m told by my local mechanic, run excellent. I was concerned during the sea trial that one was overheating and it turned out to be an impeller issue. But in that moment I reached out to a guy selling 2 KAD43’s who is willing to sell them for $6k each and they’re reportedly newer and run well. My local mechanic tells me there will likely be a difference in the wiring harness and that my current setup is the better of the two and he’s advising me to leave well enough alone and stick w what I have. Any thoughts???

I'd start by asking what is wrong with the existing KAMD42's?

Why would you entertain making at least a $15K bet on a pair of engines that haven't been surveyed?

Sounds like you don't have much faith in the local mechanic - I'd say if he's worthy of the title, his opinion is probably better than anyone who hasn't even seen your vessel, let alone boarded it...

First, let me say thanks for the response. And in answer to your questions, my concern about the existing KAMD 42’s is they’re 30 years old and they have about 3000 hours on them. Judging by the way, the seller of the boat who is the original owner maintained it I would say he was not the most diligent of owners. Regarding the local mechanic, I trust him implicitly and clearly he’s watching my pocketbook as well as offering his professional opinion. So in the end, I’ve read that many mechanics will tell you that age is more important than hours and given the age of these motors I think I have legitimate concerns. Lastly, I’m not gonna go out and spend $13 grand on motors without having them surveyed or having an independent mechanic look at them first. I’m not even sure that they’d fit because I know the KAD 43s are bigger and if there’s gonna be issues with the harness and wiring up the boat, I’m not looking to create headaches for myself. I was just looking for some insight and third-party perspectives. Anything else you might add would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.
