Mariner 30 - Help identifying

98ron

New member
Hi, I have just inherited a Mariner 30 and am trying to find the EXACT model/make/serial number etc for ordering parts.

It is a 2-stroke 2cyl electric start.

The badge says "Mariner 306...." followed by more numbers but the badge is damaged

Underneath, there are three boxes as follows:

Box 1 - Looks like 689

Box 2 - Illegible

Box 3 - 552048

"Made in Japan, Pays D'Origine Japon"

On part of the engine (looks like a plug in the casting of the block) is stamped: 552048

On the head (next to one of the spark plugs is embossed: T.3 68901

When I search here http://www.marineengine.com/parts/mariner-outboard/ , for "552048" or "689-552048" "689-01-552048" or any combination, I get no results.

I am taking a guess at this:

but i do not want to guess and any help to confirm would be much appreciated and an explanation of how you arrive at any conclusion.

I am starting this out in Corfu next month and need to take parts out with me as they are a headache to obtain in Greece.

Thanks.

You have a 1992 model - last year of production.

It was built by Yamaha with 100% Yamaha parts and branded as a Mariner which was sold by Mercury.

The 689 part of the serial is the Yamaha designation. It means that your motor is "mechanically" a 1979-1985 Yamaha model 30AE. These were not a "sub-standard" model but they were NOT leading edge when they were sold. Merc contracted Yami to build these so they would have a budget option compared to a "brand new Merc". So basically you were getting a 1979 Yami, brand new in 92 for hundreds less than a 1992 30 horse Merc.

The part you can't read should read "EL" for Electric Start (from factory) Long Shaft (so meant for a 20" transom).

The 552048 part is the "actual serial" which indicates the 1992 production.

On Merc parts lists your model would be listed as a Model 30A.

Here's the link to this sites parts availability for your model - http://www.marineengine.com/parts/mariner-outboard-parts/30a/689550101-and-up-el

Thanks Graham. This is extremely helpful. Thanks for taking the time to reply.
As I undertake this project I will try to make my own useful contributions on this engine from my experiences.

So to clarify I have now had somebody in Greece check the engine and the following number is visible..

Mariner 30

30ELO = 30HP Electric (Ignition) Oil injected

689 (Yamaha) L (Long shaft) 552048 (unique serial number)

I am told by Bill Higham in Manchester (UK) that this is quite an unusual engine, however we have confirmed that the correct parts are here:

http://www.marineengine.com/parts/mariner-outboard-parts/30a/689550101-and-up-el

The only confusion is why 'Auto Blend' appears on this page, because this engine is oil injection.

If you are in the UK I can recommend Bill Higham marine if you need advice, parts and/or repairs.

Cheers.

If someone could help it would be greatly appreciated I also have a 30AE with the badge that reads 689-S-101350 and have no luck in finding any parts or any information on the motor

Similar to a Yamaha USA 30ESN/ELN. Check out the Yamaha parts catalogs for either model, available from a number of US dealers.
