Hi all,
There is more posts like this one but I have this problem and I'm not sure what to do next
I have (an '80s I think) 24' long boat with a Volvo Penta TAMD30 with a 280 leg. In reverse the leg "clunks" and kicks/swings up (so no reverse thrust).
The boat is in a marina (and I don't have a huge trailer) so it's costly to lift it and I can't work on it myself in the boat yard.
It's been out and in twice while a boat mechanic worked on it. The first time was just a clean-up of the leg and the mechanism but that didn't help.
I got hold of a Volvo Penta "Sterndrive reverse repair kit" (part # 875361) and on the 2nd fix attempt the mechanic replaced the parts (jaws/hooks, springs and bars). and also said that there was a "bent rod" that he fixed.
Now it does hold in reverse if I am very gentle (having reverse for docking is so much better than no reverse at all) but if I put any amount of throttle in reverse it releases and kicks up and I think it needs a bit of a good forward throttle to [semi] lock it back in again.
I'm not sure if there is any kind of adjustment (for when the throttle is in reverse and the mechanism should be locked?) - inside the boat?
At this point I'm also thinking about if I can get a stainless steel strap (like a really big/wide jubilee strap) around the leg and permanently stop the leg swinging up backwards (I've never used the trim button so I'm not worried about that) - but I have read that the kicking back is a safety feature in case the leg hits an object while going forward so that's a consideration perhaps.
Other people must have had, and come to a solution, for this problem I'm hoping.
Thanks for any help/advise.
Derek
