Any ideas as to where the wires on the shifter's handle connect to the engine or outdrive? These are the wires attached to the switch which is supposed to be pressed to engage the outdrive in gear. Cannot get the outdrive to engage forward or in reverse. It works fine if we just want to accelerate the motor. 7.4Gi Volvo Penta, 1999

Post up a pic of it, the wiring does not have anything to do with getting the shifter to engage FWD or REV, that is usually a spring loaded mechanism inside the shifter, on some you push in the center button to dis-engage the shift system so you can run the engine at fast idle to warm up. Then to re-engage the shift system you put the handle back in the neutral position. Center button should pop out.
On others like the old OMC shifters you slide the shifter out a bit and then the shift system is dis-engaged. If your shift system doesn't re-engage, that mechanism is probably stuck inside. The only wiring inside is for the tilt n trim system, and neutral safety switch.

PS I have a Teleflex (Seastar) aftermarket control in my garage that I'm going to install this fall to replace the old OMC control, they way these work is that normally you push in a button on the top of the shifter to go from neutral to FWD or REV. To get it to disengage the shift system, you push in that button and the center button at the same time. Then you can advance the throttle for fast idle warm up. Then to re-engage the shift system, move the control to the neutral position.

the switch on the underside of the handle, what does that do?
the trim switch is on the side as in the first pic.
is there a button in the handle down where it pivots on the housing/mount?

Thanks...I have no idea what the button does. I was told to press it before engaging the shifter in gear. There are 3 wires coming out of it (1-white, 2-Purple). The trim works fine and the center push button to engage the throttle works fine also. There are no other push/ pivots buttons on the handle. I am going to spray silicone grease on the entire assembly just in case something is sticking.

That’s something I have never seen, but I guess it uses the electric switch to energize a solenoid or something similar to allow you to shift into gear…I’d have to look it up on a Volvo parts site to figure it out…

I think that there is a button to be pushed to shift on the recess on the shift lever where it enters the housing. Between the all black and the blur I can't tell... Try a picture of the left side of the control at the housing level... not the top end of the shift lever.

Thanks...I will look. I have had this boat for 15 years and this is the first time I have encountered this issue. I do not see any other push buttons or switches on the handle/assembly. I will look on the back of the outdrive to search for any type of electrical connection or solenoid. I did replace the starter before this issue began so I will look at those connections also.
