I have a 40hp Mariner model # 40 ELTO serial# 500548 and would like to know the year?

Was there another prefix code number before the serial number such as 676A, 6E9, etc.?​

Without that number your 500548 comes up in online search as a suggested to be 1987 40_HP [ELPTO] Model number 7040737.

I do have 6E9 so I'm assuming I have a 1987 Thank you for your impute!

Take a look at the Yamaha parts catalog for a 1986 40 HP two smoke and see if it looks like your Mariner. I bet it will.
