1981-83 18 hp reverse problem

from what i can tell this engine is probably between an 81-83 model and the reverse is shot. any place to start looking for new gears/ clutches or would i be better off to find a lower unit in decent shape?

Best to take it apart to see what is wrong first.-----Remove lower unit and check operation of shift rod / clutch dog.----Any chance water was in the lower unit and froze ??

I'm about certain it is the dog. it shifts into gear but grinds when you give shift into gear and give it throttle. forward gear is fine.

Racer, from what I'm seeing, tell me if I am wrong, can that gear assembly and prop shaft be taken out without dropping the entire lower unit?

Yes it can be pulled out.----Item #53 is a left hand thread.-----I doubt it is a bad clutch dog.-----If it is bad you need to inspect linkages and shift adjustment.
