what damage if any will be caused by running a 4 cycle in neutral that's in the water at 80 to 100% rated rpm?..in other words no load..

worst case scenario you blow your motor up. It amazes me how many people want to do this when it is absolutely one of the worst things you can do to a motor. Any motor 2 or 4 stroke they are simply not designed to run that high with no load.

..."what component fails?....

It can drop a valve (which totally blows up he motor), throw a connecting rod, shatter a piston, toss a timing belt, spin a main bearing, rattle loose parts...all of which is not good!

I did not answer your component question because at 5000 in neutral if something goes it wont go alone. the componet that will fails will be the motor
