Mercury 100hp outboard information

Just bought a 1970 whaler Eastport with a 100hp Merc on back. Thought it was tower of power, but pulled cowling, it is a straight 4. Trying to determine year and any info. Was the 4cyl better than the 6 cyl version? It is only a 16'7" whaler so weight is important

They never made that style of motor in a 6 cylinder.------Do not confuse this looper style motor with the earlier crossflow inline 6 ( tower of power ) and the smaller 4 cylinder version.------That looks to be a late 1980's model.-----Post the serial # to quickly determine the year.
