New to boat ownership, but very mechanically inclined. I purchased a little 1994 Ebbtide DynaTrak 160 with a 1994 Johnson V4 VRO last fall to help out with hurricane rescues here in TX. Once I get the bot warmed up it idles fine or low throttles fine. Last year it worked okay at open throttle most of the time but I was told by the PO that sometimes it would have an issue where it cut power.
Ive been doing some diagnosing since it’s the start of a new season, and while out on the water the above has been happening more than not when you go to full throttle. It will usually go wide open with no issues, get up on plane, start trimming out then all of a sudden it acts like it’s choking out and slowly slows down. When it’s running right it feels like this boat flies pretty good.
Anyway, I’ve noticed the primer bulb never gets hard, but I’ve verified that it isn’t bad. I’ve opened the VRO pump to look at the diaphragms, and replaced the fuel filter. VRO pump is working correctly, but I have a spare to delete it just in case it starts to act up.
Today I have the engine cover off, wanting to check out the carburetors and do a compression test. So I pump the bulb (engine is tilted down), and heat fuel pumping up into the system. However (and I did note this happened last fall as well) there is fuel that comes out of the 2 weep holes in the front of the lower unit. The fuel system never maintains constant pressure due to this, and I feel that is most of my top end problem.
If I tilt the engine up/forward, even more fuel runs out the weep holes from inside. And only a few drops run out of the insides of the carburetors. Originally I thought the carb floats were stuck, but that does not appear to be the case?
What is a reason that fuel would be pushing into the engine and basically down to the lower unit?
Sorrt for the long post, I hope I was descriptive as possible.
Thank you!
