1994 Intruder 150 - Shift Interrupter? SAFE Mode? Carbs? Frustrated....

Hi all,

Looking for some guidance before I start throwing an absurd amount of $$$ into parts I really dont want to buy. Thanks in advance.

Model is J150GLERV and this problem is very intermittent. Seems like my engine is either in SAFE mode or possible shift interrupter switch. Compression test came out fine. First time it would only do this at WOT, trimmed all the way up hauling butt. Shut her down, re-started, and made it back to the ramp at about 75% throttle. Fished a whole week with no issues, then same conditions trying to make a long run WOT, trimmed up. Caught me off guard on Lake Wheeler 17 miles from the ramp and I was able to limp her home. During this mess while limping I was so frustrated at one point that I left her at WOT (still only doing 14 mph) and she tried to pick back up a time of two. After starting to pick back up, it ran like a champ for about 2-3 min before slowly dropping in RPM's back to a crawl. No alarms, plenty of water spitting out of the pee tube, and all the primer key pushes in the world made zero difference. Timing roller is in the right spot and seems to be doing what it should.

I do know I probably do need to rebuild carbs/replace bowls due to having to hit the primer to get her to plane when warm and load on a trailer ever since I bought the boat about 6 months ago. May be related, may not be.

Does anyone know what the resistance should be on the interrupter switch when open and closed?
Any suggestions on what else to test?

Also should note that primer bulb stays firm. Havent checked for spark because of how intermittent this issue is. Shouldnt be any reason for knowing I have good spark 90% of the time. Havent looked at fuel filter due to replacing about 6 months ago and the old one was quite clean. No water separators (idk why Ranger didnt install in the mid 90's) BUT i have two 18 gal tanks. One filled at one station, the next fill up at another. Switched tanks during the issue for giggles.

Does the boat have a tachometer? What is WOT? What is 14mph? Disconnect shift switch and run. Does your warning system work?

It does have a tach. WOT is 5200 rpms w/ a 24p Raker (eventually planning for a 23p to get rpms closer to 5500). At 14ish mph (judging from Lowrance unit) it’s sub 3000. My clear judgement to actually study or take a pic of rpms was a bit clouded at this point being so far from the ramp. Yes, alarm works and not sounding.

Take it to a less used boat ramp, back 1/2 way in and run it on trailer. You will put more load and build more heat in engine quicker than running it around. When it acts up, pull cowl and test for spark

Some orderly trouble shooting is required.------Run with a timing light hooked up to see if it is a spark issue when motor falters.-----Run with a portable gas tank ( 6 gallon ) and a good hose the verify fuel supply.----Check the vapor tank and vapor pump.---All filters for fuel.------Also use a STRONG FLASHLIGHT to shine in each carburetor bore at full throttle.-----That allows you to compare the fuel coming up the nozzles for each cylinder.-----Remember that motor has 6 separate crankcases / cylinders and each is fed by just 1 carburetor.-----Not much money spent doing simple testing and inspection.
