1991 Johnson 25 HP (J25TELEI) Fuel Issue

Hi all,

I recently bought this motor and am currently troubleshooting a difficult start/idle issue. I have noticed that gasoline is pooled under the carb and don't think this is normal. If this is not normal, what is the likely cause of this? Thanks.
 
Did you have the motor tipped up right before that? How old is that gas ? I don't think it is supposed to be yellow that might be your starting running issues.

The motor has been in normal position, and you’re right about the color of that fluid. It looks more like oil but the smell is definitely gas. I am thinking there’s a slow leak somewhere.
 
Hard starting and poor idle may be two separate issues.
Start with a compression test,post your numbers.
Then do a spark test,needs to jump7/16 open air gap

Thanks again. I did that yesterday and the compression is 125 psi for both cylinders. I also did a spark test and both cylinders jumped a gap of 1/2". My next step is to clean the carb and use a rebuild kit. If that doesn't work either then maybe servicing the fuel pump with a fuel pump kit as well. Any other ideas is appreciated.
 
I still don't understand why the fuel in the pictures I uploaded are dark like that when it should be clear/bluish? Could this also be an indication of a deteriorating fuel line? Can someone recommend a good fuel line to buy at the local parts store such as NAPA? Thanks!
 
Sure: Ensure gear in neutral, lanyard connected, connect fuel hose to motor, and pump primer bulb until hard. Then,
1) If motor is cold, pull choke a couple of times, turn throttle control handle to start, then push start button. At this point, the choke is all the way in.
2) If motor is warm, I don't touch the choke at all, turn throttle control handle to start, then push start button.

That's it.

Could the dirty looking fuel be coming from a loose/damaged recirculating hose where it connects to manifold.?

Thanks for responding. I am in the process of cleaning/rebuilding the carb. I will also replace all the fuel hoses while I have the carb removed. After I am done, I will update the thread.
