Kohler generator shuts down after 5-10 sec: auxiliary fault

Hi all,

I'm having some generator troubles and am at anchor. After reading the manual 100 times, I haven't figured it out yet. Hopefully you can help!

My Kohler generator stops after 5 to 10 sec: the Auxiliary fault light is on (constant while running, not flashing).

- The engine /impeller feels cool
- I don't hear any overcranking, I don't think it's the fuel
- No other alarm lights (like oil pressure) are on
- The coolant sensor was faulty a while ago, but I gave it a clean and now it is fine
- After the first time it happened it did run for a few hours and then it shut down during the night again. Now it's back to happening after 5-10 seconds with auxiliary fault light on.

Do you have an idea what the issue could be and/or how I could test?

Random idea: could it somehow be something to do with other systems that are connected? Like the fire alarm system

Thanks ahead!

Hello, did you have anyluck?

Just reviving an old thread if anyone can add to this.

I have a 8eoz Diesel w/ 1700 hrs from 2000 as well and shuts down when start button is released. The fuel solenoid will pop out immediately after releasing the start button to shut her down. If i remove the fuel solenoid she will run for about 10 seconds b4 she shuts down again. I am not getting 120v at the breaker at all so since I have removed the fule solenoid and by passed the 3 sensors (OP, Temp, Water) i know this is shutting down bc it is not making 120v so it looks like i have an issue with the backend which I will be taking off soon.

My question is this. How is this unit shutting down if the fuel solenoid is disconnected? I am guessing the control board signals something to shut it down but if the fuel solenoid is off how does it shut down? Does it starve it from air somewhere?

Not knowing this is really bothering me so if anyone can explain that would be great lol.

thanks

I've only seen the fuel solenoid used to kill a diesel engine (routinely) - never seen one is a factory 'choke' setup...

Is the solenoid getting enough current to stay open in the run mode...which should be independent of the 'start button'...

Year, model number and fuel type would really, really help.

Are you starting it with the switch in the 'ship's power' set to ON, or OFF? Never start a generator with the loads connected.

A friends' generator wouldn't continue to run and it turned out that the voltage regulator had failed. Post the model, so someone can find the manual.
