Checking out old coils on 9.5 evinrude.

From what I'm seeing on utube video's a good primary reading is around 1 to 3 with meter sat on 200 ohms. My coils both read 1.2ohms ... Secondary readings are 3.2 and 3.4 ohms with meter set at 2000k Would new coils show much higher secondary reading's,and would higher secondary reading's equate to better spark? Plan on replacing them but maybe keep as spares. But not if their borderline bad. Old Prestolite wires tell me this setup may be original. Thanks to everyone. Enjoying learning about this old engine.

Hope this helps.

Those are replacement coils.----Clean and set points using a meter.---- Replace condensers.-----If spark jumps a gap of 5/16" those coils are good.

Note where the coil comes close to magnet there's a 16th of an inch that seems to been worn off both coils.
They were not set up quite correctly. After re-installing them, turn the flywheel by hand, it should not rub anywhere.
Look for the boss cast into the timing plate, there is one at each ”leg” of your coil. The face of the coils leg must be flush with the vertical surface of that boss.

Thanks racerone got new points and condensers. Will replace wires and check. Was concerned that coils tested so low on secondary test at 3 .2k .

Gotcha. Will be looking for that. Thank you. Thought about getting the coil ring to be sure. Thanks

Forget the coil ring, no need to spend $$ for them. If your fingernail doesn’t catch, moving up or down, your good.
if you’re really anal you can use the edge of an Exacto, (razor knife). Place the edge of the blade square against the boss, move the coil to just touch the blade.
Notice there are 3 screws on each coil. The middle, (long one), goes through into the timing plate below. one more on each leg of the coil. Look closely at the legs of the coil, one of the holes is more of an oval, that’s the adjustment one. Line up the opposite leg with the boss, & lightly tighten that screw. The coil is able to pivot slightly, & you can line up the other leg. Recheck then1st one hasn’t moved, then snug them all down.

Thanks Edchris177. Will do that.I appreciate all you guys helping me learn this engine. I'm taking notes to fall back on. Really appreciate all your support.
