Engine: OMC Ford 460/7.5L
Outdrive: King Cobra - Cone clutch

Having starter issues with this engine. The boat had an auto parts store reman starter installed when i bought it. Started 5 times. Now it grinds like hell. Removed the starter and discovered the nose cone bushing was shot, and the bendix drive had swirl marks around the base. Indicative of over-extension into bellhousing and meshing into ring gear teeth.

I ordered an aftermarket starter to replace with, API p/n 10094 from Sterndrive Engineering (SEI).

OEM #
0984536, or 0988013

Aftermarket listed options
18-6270 Sierra
70212 ARCO

SEI website specified 12 tooth pinion. When I recieved the starter, it was equipped with a 10 tooth pinion. I installed the starter on the boat and attempted to start. Nothing more than a moderate "Clunk" sound. I removed the starter and found no signs of ring gear engagement or teeth wear marks.

I called SEI back and they said to return the part and they would discontinue the product because all of the #10094 starters in their warehouse were equipped with 10 teeth pinions, and the website specified 12 tooth. They also mentioned that only one other #10094 was purchased in the last 3 years, and it was returned as well (reasons unknown).

Question: What starter is the correct one for this engine? What is the correct pinion tooth count?

Im looking to purchase either an ARCO starter # 70212, or Sierra # 18-6270 (only other 2 options listed). I just want to be done with this starter debacle!

P.s. It has a 180 tooth ring gear, and all the teeth are in great shape.

Our host can get you the ARCO part - look here:

Arco option

If you want some confidence, you can call ARCO, on Monday, to verify the part number... just be aware that this is their busy season...

Ive already called ARCO and they cant verify the pinion tooth count on their starter. I really want to know what the issue is, whether it be the wrong pinion , wrong nosecone, or whatever is causing it not to work. Once SEI accepts the return, i imagine i will go with the ARCO

No, i said what i said. API went out into their warehouse and counted every tooth on every starter. ARCO rep wouldn't leave his desk. He didn't have the pinion count listed on his info tab, and he took 0 effort to find out.

I got an Arco 70200 starter for my Ford 302 and it fit and worked perfectly. I upgraded from the heavier old style starter with the band around it to the PMGR starter. It does have 10 teeth (the old style has 9) and draws less current. Very satisfied.
