2001 150 HPDI: what causes "safe mode" (aka "limp mode")?

One engine seems like it could be going into "safe mode" for a very short time while at normal cruise RPMs. "Very short time" = less than 1/2 second. Then it comes back to full power again, but not for long. I have done a lot of troubleshooting, that I won't get into here, because all I want to know at this point is what are ALL of the conditions that can cause this engine to go into "safe mode"? I can't find a comprehensive list anywhere, but surely such a list exists. Thanks!
 
There is no "safe" mode in a Yamaha. If and when the warning horn sounds stop the motor immediately.

In a two stroke Yamaha the alarm sounds for low oil in the main oil tank and for over temperature.

In a four stroke Yamaha the alarm sounds for low oil pressure and for over temperature.
 
Well, I'm not sure what you mean that there's no "safe mode". Maybe you mean that the mode where the RPM won't exceed 2,000 isn't really "safe"? On my motors, when the oil gets low, I get an alarm, and the motor won't exceed about 2,000 RPM, and that's what I'm talking about.

Regardless, you answered my question: the conditions that can cause this mode (whatever you want to call it) are low oil in the main tank, and over-temperature. Thanks!
 
I know exactly what you are talking about. RPM reduction mode. When there is a problem.

Yes. It is not safe, or smart, to run the motor when the alarm is sounding. To do so can cause great harm to the motor.

Many have suffered thinking that it was "safe" to operate the motor when the alarm was blaring and the motor would not exceed ~ 2000 RPM.

Do so at your own peril.
 
There is also the small oil tank on the motor that has a level sensor and I believe if it gets low horn goes off and rpm limited to 2000 rpm

That is the main oil tank. Will have some oil left in it when the alarm goes off. Keep running the motor if and when that oil is used up, thinking that it is safe to do so, and the motor can be destroyed.
