Aftermarket CDI boxes, WORTH IT?

Hey y'all, I've got a few Mercury 200 20hp motors that I am restoring. Being Mercs of course the wiring is botched on every one of them, and unfortunately most of them are the Thunderbolt models (CDI controlled instead of points ignition). The CDI boxes cannot be rewired, I even tried removing the potted epoxy to reman one myself but cannot remove the epoxy without damaging the board and it's too labor intensive. My question, are the aftermarket CDI boxes worth it? Do they work? Is it worth the risks? (I've heard they can cause premature engine failure if not made correctly) OEM parts cost $300+ new, an aftermarket one is less than $100. What should I do?

CDI Electronics Inc would be your best bet, some say their quality has gone down. I have used their stators on two engines without any problems. Avoid Amazon or other very low cost offerings for theses types of parts.

Thank you! I will check them out, the cost differential is very tempting to get the eBay parts, but I know it can burn down your motor. I appreciate the input 🫡 thank you for talking some sense into me.
