Hello All, I'm having trouble tonight starting the engine. Perhaps I flooded it by pulling too long with the choke on, it will kick into life briefly with a squirt of ether.
My question is about the exhaust though.
I bought a boat, included was the 2 stroke motor. Yesterday it did start without any trouble but did not respond well to the throttle and was a fair bit smokey.
What causes blue smoke with a 2 stroke when the fuel is very lean?
 
Gas / oil must be mixed at 50:1 on that motor !----Smoke is normal.-----Install a new water pump impeller now.----Check for strong spark.
 
Perhaps fuel pump diaphragm is ruptured.----That would flood 1 crankcase with fuel.-----In my opinion a 40 year old motor needs a complete inspection before leaving the dock !

Thanks, I take that very seriously and while I am trying to solve a beginners understanding I am trying to find a service mechanic.

I have ordered a pump kit, it will be a few days and I watched someone from OM Fishing explain the water system.
 
Many videos to help with simple repairs.-----Shocking as to what you have to pay at some shops.----That is if you can find a shop to take on the work on older motors.

I questioned my local repair center if they had attorneys working on the motors considering the labor rates.
 
Your location ?-----Some shops need to charge those rates to keep the door open.-----Year round taxes and bills to pay , sometimes with a short season.
 
Southeast Michigan Oakland County $165.00 per hour plus parts. I can understand the high cost of keeping a business open. The reason I learned to repair and maintain my personal outboard motors. Find nice Older motors for cheap as too costly for most to repair.
 
I should move there.------Yes , older motors can be and are a SUPER , SUPER deal if you can do the repairs yourself.
