If you dont want to read all of that below here is a summary of this is, how do I use the trim harness with a stand alone switch that is not connected the the main wire harness of the boat motor to control the trim?

Hey everyone. I'm trying to wire a new switch for my 1984 90hp v4 power tilt. The tilit works fine, relays are good and new switch works too. The issues I'm having is the old throttle box had a switch on the handle and would work fine with key was turned into "on" position. The "new" throttle box does not have a trim switch and that is why I'm trying to wire in one on my dash. I'm am having trouble trying to figure out how to wire in the new switch, the wires I have are Blue/white which is up, green/white which is down and a red/white which I'm not sure what it does. It has has 2 other wires but I think those are for a trim gauge. I'm assuming I need to bypass the old way the box would supply power to the handle mounted switch. Do I need to install something or use a different switch? Like stated before if I connect the old box back up trim works fine since the old box has a switch already on the handle.

you are correct on the color of wires,blue/white is up,green/white is down the red/white is the power wire.are you using omc control boxes or something else.if the boxes are the same you can just switch the handles.

Yes I am using 2 omc control boxes but one is a surface mount and the other is a side mounted box. I need the side mounted box. Not sure those would be interchangeable.

There should be a small wiring harness that comes from the engine to the control box that has nothing but the tilt and trim wires and trim gauge wires in it.Just tap into those wires,be sure to use sealed connectors so there moisture proof.

I did it is pictured in the photos. I made the middle connection to the red/white and the other colors to corresponding directions on the switch. It does nothing... it's not getting any power it seems. I believe the old shift box was supplying power when the ignition was turned maybe from the soleniod? Since the new box doesnt have the same ignition it doesnt connect to the trim wire to supply power. Not sure how to wire up the new switch to be stand alone with the trim harness.

The red wire should be hot all the time whether the keys on or not.Go to mastertech marine.com,he has wiring diagrams listed there.Might help you out.

Ya i looked at those, they sort of help.. it looks like i may have to remove the wire going to the starting solenoid and make it hot all time? I think that's why it isnt working since the new harness isnt transferring the power when key is turned. That is the only thing I can think of.. the trim harness seems to get no power with new shifter box
