1970-73 evinrude Water tube installation trouble

so have a 1970 25hp 25002E im rebuilding. powerhead and lower unit have been completely refreshed now im doing the exhaust housing and having issues mounting my new water pick up tube. new grommet has been installed but i cant seem to find a good way to get the proper leverage necessary to force the tube into the grommet without damaging the pick up tube itself. wondering if anyone has any ideas that would help make my life alot easier as information on the subject online has been extremely limited.

Did you install the grommet with one nib positioned in the hole ?----A bit of grease on the tube and it slides into the grommet.----Then lower unit is installed.---Simple.

I am having the same issue with my 2004 Johnson 30 HP. The waterline isn't in a fixed position and it's hard to make sure it's lined up. All my attempts have failed and you can see where the pipe is hitting the grommet but not sliding in. Next step will be to try using the old grommet from the other pump

Maybe try some emery paper to create a slight bevel on the OD of the water tube?Make sure its nice and smooth.

Do you have the correct tube?---Correct grommet?
Everything is as it was when I replaced the pump. The issue is that the waterline isn't in a fixed position so it doesn't line up with the grommet. When I get lined up and try to push the bottom end up you can't tell if it went in or not until you drop it in the water and test it.

The water tube MUST be installed into the exhaust housing FIRST.----Then the lower unit is installed.---Easy to turn the water tube so it lies up with grommet on the pump.
