Hi,
The thermostat has no particular orientation how it sits in the housing. Those two metal support arms are just how the stat is manufactured.

I would give you 2 points for neatness though if you left them as they are in the photo:)

Good to see someone cares about the health of their 20D!

Thanks appreciate the help 👍. Got her in good condition trying to keep her that way. Doing all the maintenance myself have got to start somewhere just have to make sure I'm doing it right 👍

Those are the best twin outboards in the world in my opinion. That's why I own one.

The carburetors are finicky though as they will give troubles if not fed CLEAN, FRESH FUEL at all times.
They are a pain to clean if you allow them to get dirty.

I would warn you against using pump fuel from lakes, camp grounds and fuel docks if at all possible. You also need to drain the carb and avoid storing the fuel longer than 60 days. If you have fuel in the tank at the end of the season, use it in something else instead of storing.

A quality fuel stabilizer is also advised for these to help minimize any mineral scale deposits forming in the very small passages in these carburetors. I use Techron Marine Fuel System Treatment in ALL my gas engines but there are several good ones to choose from.

I also use a modified trashcan for flushing instead of muffs. Be aware that, if you use the on board flush port located next to the thermostat, you can expect it to start leaking under the hood fairly soon. Some guys plug that hole. It works to stop the leaking and doesn't cause any problems.

Good luck.

I run my carb empty after every use we have fairly decent petrol here In ireland so I don't use a stabiliser just never let any petrol sit in my carb . I top up every week with fresh fuel . I run in freshwater lake and rivers but when I'm doing my maintenance I use a tub similar to a barrel to run the engine . I also took your advice and blocked up that nuisance of a flush port with an m8 x12mm bolt with an o ring worked like a charm

Ethanol free fuel?

Not ethanol free 10% ethanol but I run the carb dry after every use so hopefully the build up doesn't get to bad eventually it will. How do you find cleaning the carb would it be easy enough for someone with no previous carb cleaning experience
Not me! @jgmo is the expert and very generous with is time!
