Hi I'm trying to find my honda bf20d on boats.net under my serial number BAMJ-1024771 I cannot find anything under this serial number or range why is this . Trying to find the correct water impeller dimensions as I've been told that honda have changed the shaft size on the outboard after 2007. I've ordered an impeller and it wouldn't even go down the shaft a couple of inches . Did honda change the impeller and what is the correct part number for my model

Hi,

Did you buy this outboard new?

The reason I ask is that your frame number sequence comes up under the 2003 BF20D model year. See link below:

Water pump impeller part number
19210-ZW9-A32

You may need to visit a Honda dealership parts department to find out about any "upgrades" to mainshaft or impeller for your particular model.

Although, it comes to mind this could have something to do with Honda naming some smaller horsepower outboards so that they get confused with larger models. I don't know.

Good luck.

No I bought it second hand I was just looking through boats.net and I realised my serial number fell under 2003 it's a strange one I don't really understand why

Talking about honda mixing up outboards when I ordered parts directly from honda they sent me parts not for my model drain bolt was wrong fuel filter was wrong and some other bits I presumed they mixed it all up

Hmmm.
I wonder....

If your outboard isn't an American market outboard but built for distribution in another country.

The "As Equipped" lettering system, such as SHA... LRA... LRTA or XHTA that explains that it's a short shaft, long shaft, extra long shaft, power trim, tiller, electric start, etc. etc. always ends in A meaning "American market"

Are there letters like those on your frame number label?

No can't seem to find any lettering on the plates describing the model of it. I'll have to contact honda woth this and see why my serial number is listed under 2003 models but manufactured in 2007. It might mean that the components are the same as the 2003 model but still makes no sense as to why the serial number doesn't match with the year of manufacture. Strange one

Yep, I agree. Please update if you get an answer.
I rang honda and they don't have an answer either they reckon that it might be because the 2003 model has been the same up until 2007 then they started to change some things up but still makes no sense to me . Unless the unit with the manufacturer date was a replacement hard to tell I don't think so it was 1 owner outboard very well looked after

Those number tags both look real- and bizarre. My Honda has both a frame serial number and an engine serial number, does yours- and would the second number be of any help.

I don’t understand how this could happen 4 model years apart. Not like there would be a time when both these tags should be together before installation 4 years apart.

Where are these tags located- both on the frame? Are they on a part that could be made up from 2 different outboards?

You were ordering parts by serial number or by year and getting the wrong parts?

NSDON makes a good point.

The part that the 2007 date is on looks like the port side mount frame. It could just be a new replacement piece??

Both tags are on the stern bracket the manufacturer date is on the left side and the serial number is on top just underneath the gear lever . I couldn't find another serial number is this one under the cowling . Ordered parts under the serial unless there was just a mix up with digits when I was ordering they sent a much bigger fuel filter big drain bolt I only needed a small phillips screw.

Both on the stern bracket ill have to take a proper look tomorrow to see if it cane from a separate outboard is an assist tilt model so the tilt unless that failed before and he replaced it . I'll have to Try contact the previous owner

see if that bolt you got when you ordered it is the same on a 2003 and a 2007?

My 130 is a 4 cylinder, the engine serial number is on the block. The 4 cylinder block stands on end facing out at the back, the 4 spark plugs stack vertically back there. The engine serial number is at the bottom of the stack, easy to see. See pic from my owners manual.

Do you have an owners manual- what date was it printed? Mine was printed in 1998, the year this model came out. See if your owners manual tells you where your numbers are.

No I haven't got an owners manual I will be heading to my boat tomorrow and I will have a look for the engine serial number when I was changing the thermostat and sparkplugs last week I didn't notice it

I think this could be the case that's its just a replacement piece I'll have to speak to previous owner and check why

This is a site with pdf for the bf20d. The serial number you have started in 2003, 1000001 to 1099999. The next one is an 1200001 to 1299999, that starts with 2005, the next series starts in 2009. I’m very curious how you got what you got for year and serial number. Page 97 shows where your engine serial number is, that location is the same place in the 2003 and 2007 manuals. If you find a new number for the engine serial number, I wonder what a dealer can figure out from that?

Well, ro add to the confusion (something I've become too good at I'm afraid) here's a photo from the shop manual I purchased, from Honda, for my 2006 BF20D around 2014-15 It's a 5th edition of the manual.

First, read the paragraph that explains that engine serial number is on the engine block. Then, compare that to the depiction below it.
All I got is Whiskey Tango Foxtrot???

Apologies for photo quality.
