283 rocker studs

I have a 283 small block V8 in my 17 foot 1952 sportsman. It was swapped out shortly after the boat was purchased in the late 50s one of the pressed in rocker studs pulled out far enough to lose contact with the valves cause a bunch of noise and a little bit of smoke and I stopped running the motor and quickly discovered this when I saw dislodged rocker. My question is, can I just press this stud back in and then have it pinned? If so, should I pin all of the studs for all of the rockers or should I have this drilled and screw in studs placed? I know that’s technically stronger, but I’m just trying to figure out the best blend of what’s necessary given that this is a vintage motor and not necessarily a high-performance application.

Threaded studs eliminates the issues with the pressed in studs....pinning them doesn't.

I would do all of them as the others are likely not too far behind to repeat the failure.

Given the vintage, you may want to investigate the going rate to have hardened valve seats added as well...the heads made back in that period fully expected leaded fuel...

Thanks for the recommendation. Can you explain a little further how pinning doesn't help. I thought it essentially prevented them from rotating or creeping out. I’m not doubting just trying to learn here.

if one stud has come free, the others are likely to be in a similar situation. Pinning a stud will keep it from coming out but the bore-stud interface is no longer at the designed press fit tolerance...so the stud can begin to 'wobble' and enlarge the bore further. Its not likely to occur suddenly but will given enough run time. The machinist that did my parts said it wasn't best practice and he never steered me wrong...
